PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Let me introduce myself to those of you who do not know me. My name is Sandi Carbonari and I have been active in our chapter for a number of years. Most recently I have been president-elect. I graduated from UConn Medical School in 1979 and have practiced in the Waterbury area ever since. I practice primary care at St. Mary's Children Health Center which is an inner city clinic with a diverse population. For the past 8 years we have been a Medical Home for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. This is a strong interest of mine along with advocacy for poor children especially those in the foster care system, oral health, and improvement in the mental health system of care for children in CT.

I have had the privilege of working with Ron Angoff for the past 4 years and I would like to thank him for the countless hours of work he has done on behalf of the children and pediatricians of CT. He has been a diligent, hard working, active, hands-on president. Ron is highly respected and well liked by fellow pediatricians and other professional colleagues, as well as government officials in the legislature, Department of Public Health, Department of Social Services, and Department of Education.

His accomplishments professionally and on behalf of the chapter are numerous. Some highlights include:

  • The development of our highly successful teleconference series enabling easy access to educational opportunities for our members.
  • His ongoing collaboration with the child psychiatrists working on improving the mental health system for all children in CT. This collaboration has resulted in a document titled:
Mental Health Care 'Blueprint' for Children in Connecticut
ADDRESSING THE CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IN CONNECTICUT:
A PRACTICAL, AFFORDABLE PROPOSAL TO RAPIDLY IMPROVE ACCESSTO HIGH QUALITY PROFESSIONAL MENTAL HEALTH CARE FOR ALL CHILDREN IN CONNECTICUT.
I encourage those of you not familiar with this document to take a look at it. It is the result of many, many hours of thoughtful deliberation and collaboration and could not have been completed without Ron's leadership.
  • He has also spent years of work on the School Health Committee which sponsors an excellent full day conference every year as well as working with state officials on health assessment forms, medications in schools, and other school related issues
Along with all this, Ron is highly respected as a terrific teacher and recognized by medical students and residents. He was the 2009 recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics National Pediatric Community Teaching Award-a prestigious honor. His patience, encouragement, and dedication are qualities we can all strive for. I know he will be a tough act to follow.

I invite each of you to become involved in our chapter to whatever extent you are able. I would be happy to hear from anyone who has ideas, input, or an interest in the many issues we as pediatricians deal with. Feel free to contact me or any of the other members of the Executive Board.
